Who should the Boston Celtics target for a backup big man?
The Celtics have addressed the majority of their offseason needs Acquiring Malcolm Brogdon and Danillo Gallonari. One need stands to stick out to me still, and that is a backup big man. In the Brogdon trade the Celtics shipped off backup Center Daniel Theis, who was part of the Celtics big playoff run. So whoβs available to fill the hole? Letβs take a look at some of the most realistic options
Dwight Howard Center Lakers
Yes, Dwight Howard would be a great fit for this Celtics bench. He brings energy on the defensive end which the Celtics preach. Howard averaged 6.2 Points with 5.9 Rebounds. While Howard is at the age of 33 I still feel like he could give 15-20 solid minutes for this Celtics team.
Trevion Williams
Williams was signed to the Celtics summer league team after going undrafted out of Purdue in this years NBA Draft. Williams is probably the best passing big man in this years draft and has some serious vision. The 21 year old averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in his final year with the Purdue Boilermakers. In his first preseason game with the team he showed a variety of flashes of what he could bring to this current Celtics team.
Demarcus Cousins
Cousins has bounced around the league after his in jury that he suffered with the New Orleans Pelicans, but has shown over the years that he still has some gas in the tank. In 2022 Cousins found his role with the Denver Nuggets after being waived by the Milwaukee Bucks. He found a spot in the Nuggets playoff rotation against the Warriors. Cousins averaged 8.9 points and 5.5 rebounds with the Nuggets. In a game against the Houston Rockets this season Cousins scored a game high 31 points, so he still has the potential to contribute to another Celtics playoff run.
