What We Learned From the Spurs vs Lakers Game

In the game of the opening season, the Antonio Spurs went up against the Orlando Magic and dismantled them. So many fans were losing their minds and preaching how the Spurs are championship contenders this season. During the game, there was top-tier ball movement, great team defense, players flying up and down the court with fire in their hearts playing the game of basketball.

All that being said, the Spurs took on the Lakers yesterday and fans had a different experience than the opening night affair. It’s safe to say their performance didn’t have fans on their feet and rolling around losing their minds. Now this team isn’t bad. In fact, they’re good. But who knows how many wins that’ll translate this year, but it also seems pretty clear to everyone involved that wins and losses are going to be beside the point.

On the Spurs end, it sure seems nice to have someone like Anthony Davis on their roster. A guy whose seven-foot-something who can run the floor, shoot threes, and just generally dominate the paint. Seems useful. It’s impressive that the Spurs were able to piece together someone like him and bring his talent into the second half. But even then, that second half was pretty devastating.

Then there’s Derrick White and what he brings to the table. But fans were a little caught off guard by him. Are there any fans out there that are panicking? Nervous? White is a favorite on the team and generally, has good talent that he brings to the table. However, fans didn’t see the good version of Derrick White and how invaluable he is to the Spurs. Now every player has an off night, but the buzz states that White isn’t what he used to be late and the thought of him is starting to fade a little in the brains of Spurs fans.

Dejounte Murray on the other hand is exactly what the people want him to be. He looks great out there. It’s as if every time he steps onto the court he looks more confident than the last. It’s also heartwarming to see him really starting to thrive in a leadership role. It’s without a doubt, getting to be his team and fans aren’t mad at it. He doesn’t seem to be shrinking away from that kind of responsibility.

Overall, they’re things the Spurs need to work on, especially after the game they had against the Lakers, but there’s a lot of good things to build on as well. And in a few years who knows where they’ll end up. Dejounte Murray might make an MVP run, Keldon Johnson might be the next Draymond Green, who knows. But one thing is for sure, even though the Spurs didn’t get the win they wanted against the Lakers, they’re a team that learns from their mistakes, goes and corrects them in practice and come out the next day with a win.
