Point guard. Arguably the hardest position in all of basketball. The NBA has seen many huge names come through the league and make their mark at the point guard position.
Here is a ranking of the top 15 point guards in today’s NBA.
15) Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Only 24, Gilgeous-Alexander has made a huge impact on today's NBA. The Oklahoma City Thunder have one of the youngest rosters in the NBA and have a plethora of draft picks for the future to build their future around Gilgeous-Alexander. Averaging 24.5 points per game this season, SGA is a point guard that Oklahoma City can trust for years to come. His ability to score the ball, along with his fantastic court vision. It is safe to say that he will be higher on this list in no time.
14) Dejounte Murray
Making his first All-Star appearance last season, Murray has been a rising star for quite some time. However, he has now flourished into a full-blown star with All-Star capability. Although he now has a new change in scenery (traded to the Atlanta Hawks in late June). Murray has developed into an elite defender at the position, not to mention his great facilitating and playmaking on the offensive end. After tallying 13 triple-doubles this past season, Murray has a very bright future in the NBA.
13) Lamelo Ball
Despite being the youngest of the Ball brothers, it is safe to say LaMelo has accomplished the most so far in the NBA of the three that have tried. At 20 years of age, LaMelo has already made an All-Star appearance and made it to the play-in tournament with the Charlotte Hornets. Ball has a bright future in the NBA at such a young age. The only thing holding him back from reaching a higher spot on this list is his lack of effort on the defensive end. However, with time players develop into better perimeter defenders in which Ball could take a further leap to increase his defensive ability this next season.
12) Fred Vanvleet
The highest-paid undrafted player ever, VanVleet has dedicated his career to the Raptors. He was dominant alongside former teammate Kawhi Leonard during their championship run together. Now leading the charge, VanVleet, despite being undersized, is a fearless finisher at the rim, along with his knock-down shooting ability from deep. VanVleet is another player that could very well creep up higher on this list if he shows more effort on the defensive end.
11) Jamal Murray
Despite missing a significant amount of time due to an ACL tear, Murray has shown as much confidence and skill as an NBA All-Star-caliber player. Murray and Jokic were among the best duos to watch during the bubble just a few seasons ago. With his athletic ability and his long-range shooting, it is safe to say that the league is excited to see Murray come back from injury and try to make it deep in the postseason with the Nuggets.
10) Jrue Holiday
Holiday is a coach's dream at the point guard position as a lockdown defender on the defensive end and an offensive threat. Originally drafted 17th overall in 2009 by the Philadelphia 76ers, Holiday has only improved since joining the NBA. Being a fierce defensive anchor that the Bucks can count on has helped them progress in the playoffs, leading them to capture an NBA Finals title.
9) Damian Lillard
The face of the Portland Trailblazers franchise, Lillard has always been a scrappy point guard that will do anything to win. Unfortunately, Lillard’s team has been underwhelming over the past few seasons. After this season's free agency, it is safe to say that the Blazers have revamped their roster to try and contend in the Western Conference. Lillard will be the cornerstone piece that the franchise will need to make a deep run into the playoffs. His crafty finishing and unique playmaking style make him one of the league's best at his position.
8) Darius Garland
Garland took a huge leap in the right direction this last season. He made his first all-star appearance and led the Cleveland Cavaliers team to double the number of wins they had received the previous season. Analysts around the league since draft day have explained that Garland can have “Stephen Curry-level talent.” In that case, we have seen the very beginning of what could be a great career for Garland.
7) James Harden
From his iconic step-back to his unbelievable handle on the basketball, Harden is one of the league's best scorers, combined with amazing court vision. Harden joined Philadelphia in the middle of this past season at the trade deadline, giving him a new change of scenery and arguably one of the best teammates he has ever had in Joel Embiid. This duo, combined with Harden’s natural ability to share the basketball, can make them a title contender for years to come.

Despite missing many games this season, Irving is one of the most dominant point guards on the court when healthy. Irving's ability to get to the rim with ease, along with his sensational handle on the basketball, makes him a defensive nightmare for teams that have to go against him. And although rumors have been circulating that Irving could be on his way to a new home in a trade, when healthy is one of the best point guards the game has ever seen.
5) Trae Young
Finding himself at number five on this list, Young has been outstanding since joining the league in 2018. Young’s ability to run the pick-and-roll makes him a nightmare for defenses around the league. In addition, his ability to shoot from almost mid-court and double-doubles makes him very exciting to watch. Young is now gaining a new teammate on this list in Dejounte Murray. The No. 2 overall pick in 2019, Morant has made a statement ever since joining the NBA. Morant has made nothing but noise for the city of Memphis, taking them to the playoffs in two different seasons. The Memphis Grizzlies have a solid young core behind Morant, who has already made an All-Star team in his career. With such an athletic build and a versatile skill set, Morant will be a name to keep an eye on for many years.

A 12-time All-Star and one of the best passers that the game of basketball has ever seen, Paul is a point guard that any roster would benefit from having. Despite being 37, Paul has remained dominant in today's NBA and led the Phoenix Suns to their first NBA finals appearance since 1993. The facilitating that Paul brings to the table is like no other, which helps produce for his team and make others around him better and more dominant on the floor.

A four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP, Curry has a case to be the greatest point guard that we have ever seen. Curry has changed the way people play the game of basketball from his unique play style and unlimited shooting range. Even at 34, Curry is still an outstanding player that every NBA player knows they need to guard, even if he is 30 feet from the basket.

From being traded on draft night to being one of the best players in the league in only a few years, Doncic is the face of the Dallas Mavericks, and it is safe to say that he has earned that spot. Doncic, averaging almost a triple-double for the entirety of his career, is unbelievable. He led Dallas to the Western Conference Finals this season, falling to the Golden State Warriors. Doncic, like most of the NBA, is one teammate away from a trip to the NBA Finals next season.
