The Problem with the Dallas Mavericks
Despite winning two of their last three games, a clear problem with the Dallas Mavericks is visible, and teams are exploiting it. The answer is their over-dependence on Luka Doncic.
Doncic was injured to start the game against Phoenix on January 26, and you would think that without him, the Mavericks would crumble, but they held strong and won against the Suns 99-95. Then they would go on to lose against Utah and win against Detroit following the return of Doncic.
Although the Mavericks pulled out the win against the Pistons, it was only through Doncic’s 53-point night that the win was even made possible. The lack of help from the rest of his team at this moment is critical to why they aren’t winning more games. Other than Doncic, the only other starter to even crack double digits in points was Spencer Dinwiddie, with a mediocre 12 points when you realize he’s the second-leading scorer on the team for the night.
The Mavericks need to expeditiously look to the trade market in hopes of surrounding Doncic with more productive players.
