That’s the Way the Cookie Crumbles
The 76ers fans have made no bones about it; they do not want Tobias Harris in a 76ers uniform come next season. Tobias Harris on the other hand has made no bones about how he feels about the Sixers fan’s treatment of him this past off-season. Harris said, “Casual Sixers fans will trade me away for a Crumbl cookie.” Harris has been under fire after he was given a favorable contract after his first season in the Sixers uniform, five years of $180 million. Many Sixers fans have resented Harris’s deal because it was given to Harris instead of Jimmy Butler. The 76ers reportedly had some interest from NBA teams in a trade for Harris.
During an interview with the Business of Sports podcast, Tobias Harris' father Torrel Harris, who is also the agent that negotiated the big deal for Harris in the Summer of 2019, was critical of the Sixer’s use of Harris since he joined the team back in 2018 in a trade from the Clippers. When asked what he thought if the Sixers had used his son the right way Torrell Harris said “I don’t think so and the reason I say that Tobias is an assassin scorer. I mean they can’t stop him. Nobody in the league can stop him. Ever since he’s been with the Sixers they put him in the corner.” What Torrel Harris is saying is true. Tobias Harris does play a lot from the corner, but I have never heard anyone on the 76ers say that the team does not want Tobias Harris to move around off the ball. Is he not allowed to set picks to free anyone up? Can he not call for a screen to free himself up? Yes, Tobias Harris does play a lot from the corner and yes he does perform well when other players may be out and he is asked to step up. However, with the $39 million that Tobias Harris is owed for next year, the 76ers are looking for a little bit more than just another role player.
