Should the Jazz bring along D’Angelo Russel In Free Agency?

ERIK WILLIAMS-USA TODAY SPORTS

The Utah Jazz have been a competitive team in recent years, but if they have decided to embark on a rebuild, they may need to evaluate their current roster and make some tough decisions. One thing is for sure, they are keeping their two big men Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler. Mike Conley is an excellent point guard, but at this stage of his career, it's uncertain if he can single-handedly lead the Jazz to a championship. The team may need to consider adding more talent and depth to their roster to increase their chances of success.

Trade Scenario

Jazz Receive: D’Angelo Russell

Lakers Receive: Mike Conley

If the Jazz were to accept a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers, it would bring the young core they have been looking for, such as the players involved. Russell is a talented young point guard who can provide scoring and playmaking. However, it would be crucial to assess if Russell's skill set aligns with the team's long-term goals and if his acquisition fits their desired playing style. In terms of potential free-agent signings, it's challenging to provide specific predictions without up-to-date information. However, during a rebuild, teams often prioritize acquiring young, promising players who can grow alongside their core. The Jazz may look for players who can contribute immediately while also having the potential for long-term development.

Russell is only 27 years old, he still has a lot of time to develop into a great player. Acquiring Russell would align with the Jazz's goal of building for the future and developing a young core of talented players. Russell is adept at handling the ball and operating in pick-and-roll situations. His ball-handling skills allow him to navigate through defenses and create scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. The Jazz, with their talented big men in Markkanen and Kessler, could effectively utilize Russell's pick-and-roll abilities, as he can make accurate passes or finish at the rim himself.

Russel's time with the Brooklyn Nets marks a significant period of growth and development in his career. Acquired by the Nets in a trade with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2017, Russell was allowed to become a focal point of the team's offense and showcase his skills. During his tenure in Brooklyn, Russell's scoring and playmaking abilities flourished. In the 2018-2019 season, he had a breakout year, averaging 21.1 points per game (PPG), 7.0 assists per game (APG), and 3.9 rebounds per game (RPG). He showcased his ability to score in a variety of ways, utilizing his shooting touch from beyond the arc and his crafty mid-range game. As we look back at his season with Brooklyn, it seemed to be his best season. He played with the right people around him, so when it was time to be effective he was able to. I think if he was on the Jazz, it could be a similar story. Furthermore, Russel's time in Brooklyn highlights some memorable performances, including a 27-point fourth-quarter outburst against the Sacramento Kings in 2019, which led to a comeback victory. This performance solidified his reputation as a clutch scorer and someone capable of taking over games when needed.

While Russell brings several positive attributes, it's important to consider potential drawbacks as well. He has faced criticism regarding his consistency, defense, and occasional shot selection. These aspects are areas where the Jazz would need to assess whether Russell's strengths outweigh his weaknesses and if his playing style meshes well with the team's system. Teams expected him to make an instant impact as soon as he was drafted in the NBA, however like every rookie, he just needed time to grow.
