How Marcus Smart’s Presence Could Balance Out Morant’s Absence:
Everyone in the NBA realm is aware of Ja Morant’s careless gun videos. These videos have resulted in a twenty-five-game suspension for Morant at the beginning of next season. Morant has been the main persona in Memphis, as all eyes are on him on and off the court. On the court, Morant's game is a force to be reckoned with as he is a key player in the Grizzlies’ offense. He is known to lead the team in average points, assists, and steals. That being stated, Morant’s absence is likely to put a dagger in the Memphis offensive game.
Contrary to his absence, Marcus Smart has officially been traded to the Grizzlies and could be a critical asset to this team. Smart, who was drafted in 2014, has been with the Celtics all of his career. During almost a decade with Boston, he has been seen as the heart and soul of the team and is recognized for his loyalty. He was also awarded 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY). Smart’s skillful defense would coincide with the Grizzlies’ recent 2022-23 DPOY, Jaren Jackson Jr. Hammering down on the defensive end could be beneficial for Memphis since the team will not be as strong on offense. Will the double-trouble defense be enough to cover the offensive void during Morant’s suspension? Or will Smart even consider showing new loyalty, heart, and soul to Memphis as much as he did the Celtics?
