Exploring the Knicks Championship Hopes as Currently Constructed
The Knick's off-season has seen them keep nearly the same team they had last year. During the off-season, the team decided to trade away forward Obi Toppin to the Indiana Pacers for two future second-round draft picks. Toppin played a role in the Knicks bench rotation last season and averaged 7.4 points per game with three rebounds per game. To replace that production, they signed shooting guard Donte DiVincenzo, who averaged nine points per game with five rebounds per game and four assists per game. They have also signed Josh Hart to a four-year extension recently, Hart played a vital role in the Knicks playoff run last season. When the Knicks start the new NBA season, they will be bringing back virtually the same team, which is not a bad thing but also not the greatest thing if you didn’t win the championship the previous season.
Development of young talent
As currently constructed, the Knicks have a playoff-caliber roster. This was seen last season as they made the NBA playoffs and got past the first round before getting eliminated in the second round by the Miami Heat, who would eventually make the NBA Finals. For this upcoming season, the key for the Knicks to improve on what they did last year is the development of their young players, especially RJ Barrett. Through four years in the NBA, Barrett has served as a solid starter who has shined bright at times but has yet to have his breakout season. Barrett averaged 19.6 points per game and five rebounds per game last season. If he can develop his game more and become an all-star caliber player then the Knicks can take another step this upcoming season. By increasing his scoring production, being more consistent, and more reliable on the defensive end of the court he can become that all-star player the Knicks are so desperate to see. Another young player who could help the Knicks improve this upcoming season is Immanuel Quickley, who averaged 15 points per game last season, serving mainly as the Knicks' sixth man off the bench. If he can keep this production consistently through the playoffs then the Knicks can have a better chance of advancing. He is a vital part of their bench rotation, especially when Jalen Brunson is out of the game.
Potential for the 2023-24 season
Based on what the Knicks did last season, it is reasonable to expect them to make the playoffs again this upcoming season. The questions then arise when they get into the playoffs. Last year the team got past the first round of the playoffs, but then were eliminated in the second round. Some of the causes as to why they were eliminated were linked to Julius Randle’s playoff performance and also the scoring production that was coming from the bench. The addition of DiVincenzo should help the bench unit get more production, that's if he does not get integrated into the starting lineup. There is a lot of potential with this team and I believe they can make it to the Eastern Conference Finals if everything goes right for them, including the young players taking another step in their development. As long as this team is consistent throughout the season and into the playoffs, I truly believe that they can compete with the other top teams in the Eastern Conference.
