Ryan Garcia weighs in 3.5lbs Above Limit, Pays Haney $150 Million
Ahead of their bout this Saturday, Devin Haney and Ryan Garcia made a bet. Haney proposed that if either fighter were to miss weight, they would have to pay the other $500,000 per pound they went over.
In a vacuum, one would think that since both men are competing for Haney’s WBC Super Lightweight title in addition to all the animosity that both men have shared since they were both competing for the Olympics as teenagers.
However, this in reality was a rather brilliant proposal by Haney, due to the fact that Ryan Garcia has been on a downward spiral so bad that it rivals that of Conor McGregor.
The past few months have not been kind to Garcia’s image. It all started with a series of media appearances that saw him bloated, raspy voiced, and slurring his words. He was also calling out UFC Bantamweight Champion, Sean O’Malley to a mixed martial arts fight, which Garcia believes he would succeed in.
He then came under fire from some rather conspiratorial topics on his social media. These included mentioning Bohemian Grove, the Illuminati, and claiming that he knew who shot and killed fameous rapper, Tupac Shakur.
This coupled with the tendencies that he is exhibiting, which suggests that he is either struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, makes it seem that Haney knew Garcia would be unable to make weight at all.
Garcia weighed in three and a half pounds overweight, forcing him to honor Haney’s wager by paying him $1.5 million. Garcia then went to the ceremonial weigh-ins carrying what appeared to be a beer.
Garcia did claim after that what he was actually drinking was apple juice, but unfortunately he could not claim that he weighed in three and a half pounds lighter and hope people believe him. Although one should never count out a boxer with natural ability like Garcia’s, betting the house on Haney may prove to be a good investment based on what has led up to this weight miss.
