Former NBA star, Dwyane Wade is joining the WNBA’s Chicago Sky ownership group. Wade’s investment in the team is making him the latest high-profile figure to invest in the league at this pivotal time in its 27-year history. The Chicago team is currently worth $85 million, which is the second-valuable team in the league, behind the Seattle Storm. Wade previously expressed interest in his hometown team last month, when he visited the Sky’s practice facility and met the players. His visit occurred around the same time as Chicago Cubs co-owner, Laura Ricketts, had just purchased a 10% stake of the Chicago Sky.

The team is in the midst of a lot of change right now, as former head coach, James Wade left to pursue an NBA assistant coaching position. Main faces for the Sky last season such as Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot, opted out in free agency to play elsewhere within the league. Those changes did not discourage Wade as he stated he saw “potential and growth” with this team and organization. Wade’s investment will now put him in the high-profile athlete ownership group, along with Tom Brady, Alex Rodriguez, and Magic Johnson.
