Fernando Alonso signs a multi-year contract extension with Aston Martin
Fernando Alonso has signed a new contract with Aston Martin that will see him continue with the team into the 2026 season.
Alonso joined the team in 2023 after leaving Alpine and drives alongside teammate Lance Stroll. Since joining the team, he was able to get back on the podium for the first time since 2013. The Spanish driver impressed with last seasonโs performance, bringing home six podium finishes within the first eight races.
The 42-year-old driver has played a pivotal role in turning Aston Martin into a title-contending force as Lawrence Stroll, executive chairman of Aston Martin and father of Lance Stroll, has pushed for. He managed to finish second in prominent races including Monaco, Canada and the Netherlands.
There was speculation as to whether the two-time world champion would continue with Aston Martin and whether he would retire from F1 as a whole. The driverโs new contract means he is no longer a contender for a potential seat at Red Bull or Mercedes.
Mike Krack, team principal of the Aston Martin F1 team, said of Alonso, โSecuring Fernandoโs long-term future with Aston Martin is fantastic news, We have built a strong working relationship over the last 18 months and we share the same determination to see this project succeed.โ
Alonso said of his renewed contract, โWhen two parties, they want something, at one point you reach an agreement. So Iโm extremely excited to keep racing and keep racing with this team, at which I feel at home.โ
