Yesterday afternoon Major League Baseball suspended New York Yankees reliever Jimmy Cordero for the rest of the 2023 season for infringing MLB's Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. To this point there are no specifics to Cordero’s violation. Cordero has accepted the suspension and the Yankees put the reliever on the Restricted List effective immediately. For now it stands that Cordero’s suspension will last 76 games, and if the Yankees play in the playoffs he still cannot join the team. As per the MLB’s policy, Cordero will have to take part in a confidential and expansive evaluation as well as a treatment program supervised by the Joint Policy Board.

The Yankees released a statement yesterday saying, “The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

Yankees Manager Aaron Boone said that, “He (Cordero) came to me.a couple of days ago and gave a heads up as to an investigation going on and that’s kind of the extent of it.” Boone also said that he was told of the suspension on Tuesday night. With this in mind, it makes sense that the Yankees recalled RHP Randy Vasquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, to start in Wednesday’s game as well as also recalling RHP Deivy Garcia before today’s game.

This season Cordero is 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA in 31 appearances. He was one of the Yankees’ crucial pieces in the bullpen. He had 34 strikeouts while also having a WHIP of 1.07.
