Yankees Lose Trevino for the rest of Season

The New York Yankees took another blow by injury yesterday as they lost All-Star catcher Jose Trevino to a right wrist tear. He was placed on the 10-Day IL retroactive to July 18th, but will miss the rest of the season as he is in need of surgery on the wrist to repair a torn triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) ligament. It has apparently been an issue Trevino has been dealing with since Spring Training and he had been hoping to play through it, but unfortunately that was not possible.
Trevino’s injury is another to the long list of Yankees players to hit the IL, joining players Aaron Judge, Nestor Cortes, Jonathan Loaisiga, Frankie Montas and more recently Josh Donaldson among others. Trevino is also joining relievers Scott Effross and Lou Trivino, both of whom are shut down for the rest of the season.
Trevino spoke on the injury saying, “It’s very frustrating. I want to be out there. I want to play; I love to play. I love to catch, I love to wear the pinstripes. There’s nothing more I want to do than go out there and play, but at this point, I’m not helping anybody.”
The 30-year old catcher had been having a subpar season for the Yankees as in 55 games he posted a .210 batting average with 4 homeruns and 15 RBIs. Trevino’s bread and butter has always been his catching ability as last season he ended with both an AL Gold Glove and an AL Platinum Glove. This year he had a bit of a regression for example in his framing. Last season he had a 53.8% strike rate when framing, which saved a total of 17 runs and led the MLB. This season the strike rate dropped to 49.9% saving 6 runs putting him fourth in the MLB behind Austin Hedges, Jonah Heim and Patrick Bailey. Trevino’s blocks above average from last season was at 18 while this season was at 4. Carrying over from last season, Trevino’s pop time to second base is 1.99 which is stil above average since the league average is 2.01.
The Yankees already have catcher Kyle Higashioka who was already switching off starting with Trevino, but the Yankees also recalled catcher Ben Rortvedt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to play. The intend to switch off both Higashioka and Rortvedt in the same way as Trevino and Higashioka. Rortvedt had a brief stint with the Yankees in late May and went 2 for 7 at the plate. This season in Triple-A, Rortvedt batted .286 with 6 homeruns and 22 RBIs.
