Was Jansen the Right Choice?: Four Sox who Deserve To Represent Boston In All-Star Game

Closing pitcher Kenley Jansen has been selected as the All-Star representative for the Red Sox. Jansen is currently the only player from Boston to be named to the All-Star Game in Seattle. He ranks ninth in the league for saves with 18. Other than that, Jansen has had some disappointing numbers for the Red Sox. His 3.34 earned runs average would be the second highest of his 14 year career if the season ended today. His WHIP currently sits at 1.38 which would also be the highest of his career.

With that being said, here are four players for Boston that deserved to be the Red Sox representative in this year’s All-Star Game.

4. Justin Turner

Justin Turner has been a great addition to this Red Sox lineup that finds themselves in what is possibly the hardest division in baseball, the AL East. Turner has the third highest batting average on the team at .282 and the team’s third highest on-base percentage at .354. His thirteen home runs and 49 runs batted in are both good enough for second-best on the Red Sox. Turner finds himself towards the top of the list for most of Boston’s offensive categories this season. His all-around offensive contribution could have earned him a spot in Seattle for the Midsummer Classic.

3. Rafael Devers

Although Devers’ batting average is lower than previous seasons, he is still making his presence felt at the plate this season through his power. Devers has 20 home runs on the season, 11th best in the league. His 66 runs batted in are good enough for fourth most in the MLB. Devers has established himself as a top third baseman in baseball and his monster power could’ve been enough to send him to the All-Star Game for Boston.

2. Masataka Yoshida

Only in his first season in the MLB, Yoshida has lived up to the expectations for Boston. His ability to consistently make contact has shown as his batting average is currently .310, sixth best in the league. His .380 on-base percentage is also 14th in the MLB. Yoshida has driven in 41 runs and hit nine home runs so far. His ability reach base not only could earn him American League Rookie of the Year, but could’ve earned him a spot as an all-star as well.

  1. Alex Verdugo

Over the past few seasons, Alex Verdugo has been the heart and soul of this Red Sox team. He has the 17th best batting average in the MLB with .288 and his 26 doubles are fourth-best in the league. He leads Boston in runs scored and has collected 35 runs batted in along with six home runs. Verdugo has been a spark for Boston’s lineup both offensively and defensively. He has also been extremely clutch this season with multiple walk-off hits. What he has done for this team could’ve been recognized with a nod to the All-Star Game.
