Top Three AL Central Prospects
As the 2023 season ends, the focus of baseball fans around the country switches to the future stars of their favorite teams. Major League Baseball's farm system highlights the future of the MLB as it shows the most promising young players who have the potential to become some of the best players the game will have to offer. The AL Central is no exception, with several up-and-coming stars ready to take the stage. According to the MLB's Top 100 Prospects in the American League Central are Max Clark (Detroit), Walker Jenkins (Twins) and Brooks Lee (Twins).
Max Clark is the top prospect in the American League Central. Clark is a smooth-swinging lefty out of Indiana, drafted with the third pick in the 2023 draft this past season. The 18-year-old is the 15th-ranked prospect in all of baseball on MLB's top 100 prospect list. Clark started in rookie ball, playing 12 games, posting an average of .283, an on-base percentage of .411, and two home runs. Clark then was called up to the Tigers single-A affiliate and played 11 games with the club. The lefty slowed down compared to his first 12 games in rookie ball, hitting .154, having an on-base percentage of .353, and slugging percentage of .180. It will take time for Clark to get accumulated to professional baseball, but when he does, he has all the tools to become one of the critical pieces for the future of the Tigers organization.
Walker Jenkins is the next ranked prospect, being ranked as the 16th best prospect in MLB's top 100 prospects. Jenkins is a six foot three, left-handed hitting outfielder out of North Carolina. Jenkins was the fifth pick in the 2023 MLB draft. The 18-year-old was the top-ranked high school prospect in the 2023 class. After signing Jenkins, the Organization sent him to start his pro career with the rookie ball team in Fort Meyers, Florida. While in Fort Meyers, Jenkins played in 14 games with an impressive slash line of .333/.390/.537 with a pair of home runs and four stolen bases. Jenkins was then called up to the Twin's single A affiliate, the Might Mussles; through 12 games, Jenkins had an impressive slash line of .392/.446/.608 with a home run and one stolen base. In total, Jenkins played in 26 minor league games between two professional levels, having a batting average of.362, On Base Percentage of .417 and a Slugging Percentage of .571. Jenkins wasted no time showing his potential and has all the abilities to be a major part of the Twins organization.
The third-ranked prospect in the American League Central is Brooks Lee. Lee is the 18th-ranked prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB's top 100 prospects. Unlike the other two prospects, Clark and Jenkins, Lee was drafted with the eighth pick in the 2022 draft out of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Lee is already in triple-A for the Twins organization and is expected to be in the big leagues next year. The five foot 11, switch-hitting shortstop, Lee is an average defender, but his bat makes him unique. In his first year of professional baseball, Lee had a slash line of .303/.388/.451 in 31 games. The 22-year-old was promoted to double-A by the end of the 2022 season. In his first entire season, Lee started in double-A and ended the season in triple-A. At the end of the 2023 season, Lee had a slash line of .275/.347/.461, also hitting 16 home runs. Lee should be a contributor in the Big Leagues next year after the Organization came off a great year, winning their first playoff game since 2004.
