The Potential of Another Subway Series

New York has had one good year for the fans throughout every sport with their rejuvenated competition. From the Knicks' run in the playoffs earlier this year to the Jets getting Rodgers back and the Devils and Rangers coming back to start a new season but by this time of the year the main teams running New York right now are the Mets and the Yankees. The Yankees and Mets are both in the NLCS and ALCS with the greatest odds to play each other in the World Series. The Yankees are up 2-0 against the Cleveland Guardians and the Mets are 1-1 going against the LA Dodgers. A Subway series hasn’t been seen since 2000 when the Yankees beat the Mets 4-1 in the series with the Yankees completing the 3-peat.

A Subway series would save New York and bring the state of New York together and against each other at the same time. Having the NBA, NHL, and NFL teams on top along with these two MLB teams would put them into the new generation. New York Mets and Yankees fans would divide but would bring the most action-packed and exciting seven-game series to the championship. This time is much different than the last 24 years ago, the Yankees have been on a dry spell of championship and playoff time since 2009, and the same for the Mets the last time making the World Series was in 2015, and before that was in 2000 and the last time succeeding was 1986.

The Yankees this season went 94-68 getting a first-round bye as Aaron Judge had another MVP season alongside the addition of Juan Soto and the Mets went 89-73 barely scrapping in and having to beat the Atlanta Braves back-to-back to get into the playoffs and having to face the leader of their division in the Phillies.

So far in these playoff series the Mets have gone in through beating the Braves to win the tiebreaker to make the wild card of the playoffs over the Arizona Diamondbacks. They went on to play the Milwaukee Brewers beating them 2-1 in the series. Next, they went into Philadelphia to play the Phillies who clinched and won the NL East for the first time since 2011. With the momentum the Mets went into Philly and won a demanding series 3-1, moving them on to the NLCS against the Dodgers. Now leading the series 1-1 heading back to New York to play the next two games.

For the Yankees, they won the AL East and got a first-round bye leading them to play the KC Royals. They won that series 3-1, moving them to the ALCS against the Guardians, and are now leading the series 2-0 going to Cleveland to play game 3. So far throughout these playoffs Judge has seemingly become a piece of himself from who he was in the 2024 regular season. Having the worst playoff strikeout percentage of all time but the team has stepped up helping the team move forward. Players like Soto, Gerrit Cole, Stanton, Rizzo, and all other pitchers have been pushing the team through innings when the captain is struggling. Turning it up in Game 2 at home, Judge came in ready, and the fans showed it. The arena was bumping, and fans were at home and the game wanted to see Judge get his groove back. And in the seventh inning, he slammed a 400-foot homerun to middle field energizing and rumbling the entire stadium which is served right to the future MVP in the AL league.

The Yankees seem to be the most dominant team along with others such as the Mets and Dodgers but do not have to face one of them until the World Series which can lead to a Subway Series. The Mets with some luck involved have looked great winning the tiebreaker, almost sweeping the Phillies, and tied up the series in LA before going home for two more games in the series. Seeing these teams face off in the Big Apple being a subway ride away would be great for the sport of baseball, for the fans, and for New York as a whole.
