Pittsburgh, PA - An hour before the Mets faced off against the Pirates this past Wednesday afternoon, the team placed star pitcher Max Scherzer on the injury list. Though riddled by injury, this season he has posted 153 strikeouts and has pitched a career best ERA of 1.93. Despite his pitching performance this season, his left side fatigue is deemed an insignificant injury and he is projected to return within 15 days.

Having played their double header against the Pirates Wednesday without Scherzer, the Mets still came out on top for the second game of this series. Not only that, but they managed to break the three game losing streak that they accumulated in the past week.

Chris Bassitt excelled on the mound and led the Mets despite Scherzer’s absence. Pitching for seven innings straight and securing 10 strikeouts, this could be considered Bassitt’s biggest contribution to the team thus far. Though the Mets have other distinguished pitchers, especially Jacob DeGrom, this type of performance is impressive when their ace of this season is down.

After Bassitt threw 101 pitches and gave up only one RBI in the sixth, Seth Lugo wrapped up the last two innings for the Mets with no runs scored. The first game of the double header was secured as the Mets came out on top 5-1.

Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo, on the other hand, allowed the Mets to secure the win 10-0 for the second game of their double header and the last game of their series Wednesday night. Oviedo making his second start, walked four batters and gave up four runs just in the top of the second. While showcasing his new fastball, he ended the night by walking eleven batters.

For the Mets, DeGrom was the pitcher of this game. He pitched seven scoreless innings and secured eight strikeouts. This game alone lowered his own ERA from 1.98 to 1.66

Notable performance Wednesday night is also given to Mets hitters. Francisco Lindor hit back to back doubles in the second and third innings which allowed the Mets to score both times. Jeff McNeil’s single in the fourth also drove in two runs and Eduardo Escobar managed to clinch a four hit night. All hitters combined led the way for the Mets 10-0 win over the Pirates. Even though their best pitcher this season is down and will be for the next couple weeks, the team has answered accordingly and in a fierce way.
