This baseball offseason has been downright depressing so far. The lockout rages on with little progress being made to this point. During a lockout, no major league free agency deals are allowed. However, minor league deals are allowed. 

This offseason we’ve seen the Red Sox take some flyers on minor league pitching depth, which is pretty much standard practice for any organization. Yesterday the Sox agreed to terms on a minor league deal with 27 year old RHP Tyler Danish. This deal also includes an invite to Spring Training. Danish was drafted in the second round in 2013 by the White Sox right out of high school after a tremendous Senior season in which he didn’t allow an earned run in 94 innings pitched. Danish to this point hasn’t really lived up to the hype. He’s pitched just 13 innings in the big leagues with a 4.85 E.R.A. to show for it. Danish also has walked more batters in the big leagues (13) than he’s struckout (11). The White Sox are the only major league team Danish has pitched for. He has also spent time in Independent ball, and also pitched in the Angels and Mariners minor league systems. His cumulative E.R.A. was 4.31 in the minors, and 3.65 in Independent ball. 

For Danish to have any chance of even pitching for the Red Sox this season, he needs to get his command in check. With a solid spring training he should start the year in Worcester. At this time of year it’s always good to sign depth, and it’s even better to sign depth with major league experience. Low risk, medium reward signing here for the Red Sox. Can we end this stupid lockout now though?
