The Texas Rangers, currently sitting atop the AL West division, have made a massive move to bolster their starting rotation by trading for Max Scherzer. After New York traded away closer David Robertson, it was clear that the Mets would be selling. Scherzer then decided to have a talk with the front office and was promptly traded.

In exchange, New York will receive the Rangers’ number 3 prospect, Luisangel Acuña. Acuña is ranked as the number 44 prospect in baseball according to MLB pipeline. And yes, he is the younger brother of Braves superstar Ronald Acuña Jr.

As a part of the deal, the Rangers will pay just $22.5 million of Scherzer’s salary, while the Mets retain the rest. Scherzer is currently in the 2nd year of his two year deal, plus his $43 million player option for next year.

Scherzer is now 39 years old, and is now having the worst year of his career by his standards. He is 9-4 with a 4.01 ERA and is still an above average pitcher who could easily improve to end the season.

Just last year, Scherzer was teammates with Jacob deGrom, and this trade will reunite the two once again. With deGrom out for the season with Tommy John surgery, the Rangers felt they had no choice but to reunite him with “Mad Max”, once again giving Texas the ace they need.

While he might be in the midst of his worst season, Scherzer will still provide an elite arm and valuable experience to a championship hopeful Rangers squad.
