Jazz on Broadway! New York Yankees Acquire Jazz Chisolm Jr.

After a thrilling start to the season where the New York Yankees became the first team to 50 wins on June 14, the wheels have fallen off significantly since that date. Since reaching the 50-win mark, the team has posted a disappointing 11-26 record, which puts them at one of the worst records in the league since the middle of June.

Brian Cashman, general manager and senior vice president for the Yankees decided enough was enough by making a major splash for a big fish in center fielder (CF) Jazz Chisolm Jr. The Miami Marlins currently have one of the worst records in baseball only beating out the lowly Chicago White Sox and Colorado Rockies. Jazz has been one of the most polarizing prospects in the league during his time in Miami as he was named the cover athlete for the hit baseball game, “MLB: The Show 23”. On the other hand, in an anonymous poll completed by The Athletic this year, Chisolm was ranked as “the single most overrated player in the league” by his peers.

What do the Yankees get in a player like Jazz? That is yet to be seen. For the season, he’s currently hitting a .249 average, while knocking down 13 home runs and reaching 50 runs batted in alongside 22 stolen bases. Chisolm is one of the more dynamic players the league has seen and with such a dominant personality, there is concern about the match with a more traditional franchise such as the Yankees. That said, if the team in pinstripes are able to get back on track, there will likely be no qualms about a little show-off moment.

In the package, the Yankees sent three prospects to the Marlins. Those players are C Agustin Ramirez, INF Jared Serna and INF Abraham Ramirez, with the most sought after of those players being Agustin Ramirez. Three players for one is always a tough breakdown to look at but when it is factored in that none of those prospects are on MLB.com’s Top 100 list, the value makes sense to bring in an electric playmaker like Chisolm to a team that has been struggling for over a month.

It is unclear whether this will be the acquisition that turns the Yankees fortunes back trending positive. What is clear however, is that Cashman and the Yankees continue to be unafraid to throw some cash or players at a situation to try and patch it up.
