Guardians' Four-Game Win Streak Snapped
On Friday Night, the Cleveland Guardians’ four-game win streak was snapped by the Milwaukee Brewers in a brutal 7-1 loss at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. Brewers shortstop Willy Adames was the star of the game, going 4-5 at the plate with two home runs and five runs batted in. Brewers starter Wade Miley (5-2) secured the win with six scoreless innings and limited the Guardians offense to three hits. Guardians starter Shane Bieber (5-5) took the loss.
The Brewers were first to get on the scoreboard with a single from Adames to center, scoring catcher William Contreras and providing the Brewers a 1-0 lead. They would never look back.
Miley and Bieber were locked into a pitcher’s duel until the top of the sixth, when Adames broke the game open further with a 423-foot moonshot to left, scoring Contreras and first baseman Rowdy Tellez. Singles by center fielder Joey Wiemer and left fielder Christian Yelich scored two more runs to give the Brewers a 6-1 lead going into the bottom of six.
It took until the bottom of the seventh for the Guardians to respond, with a solo home run to right center from third baseman Jose Ramirez. That would be the only run the Guardians would score.
In the top of the ninth, Adames put the game out of reach with another round-tripper to center. The Guardians were unable to respond and left the game with a 7-1 loss. The Brewers are 35-6 this season when scoring at least four runs.
The Brewers and Guardians will square off again two more times this weekend on Saturday and Sunday at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio. The Guardians are two games out of first place Minnesota Twins in the AL Central and the Brewers are 1.5 games of the surging Cincinnati Reds in the NL Central, who are on a 12-game winning streak. It is unclear whether either team will be buying or selling at the trade deadline this season.
