Giants’ Historic Sweep at Dodger Stadium

The last time the Giants swept the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine was nearly 11 years ago, in August of 2012, during their second World Series Championship run in the 2010s. Though a Giants sweep at Dodger Stadium did happen five previous times, this one was done in such a stunning and impressive way; it will be difficult for Giants fans to forget this one, maybe even for years to come.

A road win for any team in any sport is significant. For example, in the NBA playoffs, teams have the goal of winning one of the two games in a road set to retain “home-court advantage”. But to go into an archrival’s home venue and pull off winning three straight games is a completely different feat. As a result, the Giants leapfrogged the Dodgers for second place in the high-leverage NL West.

An action-packed, dramatic, nail-biting extra innings win on Friday, a 15-0 blowout on Saturday, and a more down-to-earth, competitive game on Sunday gave the Giants a variety of wins.

Right now, the Giants are stringing together timely hits and getting solid contributions from many of their pitchers, regardless of whether they have been starting games or emerging from the bullpen. The mix of experience and youth has also shown through in recent days. During the series, Brandon Crawford went six-for-12 with 3 runs batted in. On the flip side, Luis Matos has exhibited plate discipline, drawing five walks and scoring seven runs in his first four games in the big leagues. The only other Giant to score seven times in his first career games is Hall of Fame first baseman, Willie McCovey. As for pitching, Logan Webb stretched out to a full seven innings on Sunday. While he did allow eight hits, he gave the Giants a great chance to win by going deep into the game.

The only blemish on the Giants’ road trip to St. Louis and Los Angeles is the number of injuries that have accumulated. Alex Cobb, who has been a steady veteran presence and one of the leaders of the Giants starting staff went down with a left oblique strain. The frequently called upon bullpen arms, John Brebbia and Scott Alexander also landed on the injured list, the former picked up a right lat strain and the latter a left hamstring strain. Though not placed on the injured list, J.D. Davis and Casey Schmitt are nursing injuries and may only see limited action in the coming days.
