Future for DJ Stewart
As the New York Mets season ends, one question looms: Should DJ Stewart be designated as the team's fourth outfielder? DJ Stewart, a 28-year-old outfielder, joined the Mets during the 2022 season after a trade with the Baltimore Orioles. So far this season with the Mets DJ has slashed .265/.344/.566 with a .910 OPS. In addition, he has 11 homers and 26 rbi’s in 49 games. These numbers indicate that Stewart can provide offensive value and contribute to the team's success.
Stewart's stats become even more compelling when considering his splits against right-handed and left-handed pitchers. Against righties, he has posted a .272 batting average and a .352 on-base percentage, demonstrating his ability to make contact and get on base consistently. While his numbers against lefties are less impressive, with a .222 batting average and a .312 on-base percentage, Stewart's potential as a platoon outfielder against right-handed pitchers is evident.
When talking about defense, his defensive capabilities should not be overlooked. He played all three outfield positions during the 2022 season and displayed versatility and solid fielding skills. He can cover multiple outfield spots, especially when injuries or matchups demand flexibility. The only downside that he has shown is the strikeout rate which is at 35%. Reducing strikeouts and increasing contact can make him a more reliable contributor. What do you think? Should the Mets consider DJ in their plans for the upcoming season?
