Cubs Steal Game Three and Series From Yankees

NEW YORK - On Sunday, the Cubs came back from down 4-1 in the sixth inning to win 7-4 and take the series from the Yankees in the Bronx. After picking up their first ever win in the new Yankee Stadium, the Cubs dropped the middle game before their late inning rally in game three which included contributions from some unlikely heroes.

Seiya Suzuki started the scoring off in the fifth inning with a solo homer. Then, in the top of the seventh inning the Cubs added an unearned run with a Jared Young groundout before Yan Gomes drove in two more in the next at-bat to tie the game up. In the eighth inning, Suzuki came up clutch again with a sacrifice fly to give the Cubs the lead and Tucker Barnhart put the Cubs up 7-4 for good with an RBI double. Adbert Alzolay has looked solid in the closer role and closed out the game in order.

For the Yankees, they got off to a very hot start. Domingo German has looked good recently and did again on Sunday, throwing six innings of one hit baseball while striking out nine cub’s hitters. However, down the stretch the bullpen faltered and wasn’t able to close the door on the Cubs. Taking the loss for the Yankees was Ron Marinaccio who allowed a hit while walking two and giving up two earned runs.

Looking ahead, the Yankees will have to bounce back after the all-star break on the road versus the Colorado Rockies who are in last place in the National League. The Yankees need a strong showing coming out of the break to maintain pace in the AL East. They are currently one game back in the wild card race. On the other side, the Cubs will need to continue to make up ground in their division and start the second half of the season with a ten game homestand. Team President Jed Hoyer said that he would like for the Cubs to be buyers at the deadline but that it needed to be justified. A few series wins at home and getting closer to a 0.500 record could be enough for Hoyer to make a splash instead of selling off key parts of the roster.
