Combined No-no For The Tigers
On a cloudy July 8th, 2023, Detroit Tiger’s starter Matt Manning, reliever Jason Foley, and Closer Alex Lange combine to no-hit the powerhouse Toronto Blue Jays in a 2-0 victory in Detroit.
It’s been two years since the Detroit Tigers had their last no-hitter thrown with Spencer Turnbull versus the Seattle Mariners on May 18th, 2021, and sixteen years since the last no-hitter was thrown at Comerica Park by Justin Verlander versus the Milwaukee Brewers. (Although it should have been June 2nd, 2010 with Armando Galarraga’s near-perfect game).
There were only four baserunners for the Blue Jays, three walks, and a hit by a pitch on the first batter Bo Bichette. Seven strikeouts combined between the three pitchers whose battery mate was Eric Hasse. Manning was removed in the seventh having thrown 91 pitches in his third start back from the injured list, letting the bullpen be perfect the rest of the way.
The two runs of the game came in the first. Spencer Torkelson doubled to drive in Riley Greene, then Kerry Carpenter tripled to bring in Torkelson.
Two dazzling plays occurred, one in the fourth where Right Fielder Kerry Carpenter hustled into foul territory to snag a falling ball on a dive to the grass against Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and one in the sixth where shortstop Javier Baez traveled deep into left field to track down a flyout from Bichette as the outfield was shifted to right.
The last time the Blue Jays were no-hit was ironically against Justin Verlander back in September of 2019
(Fun Fact: This was Kevin Gausman’s second start against a no-hitter. His first was in 2015 as an Oriole versus Hisashi Iwakuma of the Mariners)
Congrats to the Detroit Tigers on their first Combined No-Hitter
