Clarke Schmidt Pitching Better But Continues To Get No Run Support

In tonight's Texas Rangers versus the New York Yankees game, Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt went 5.1 innings allowing 6 hits, 1 run with 3 strikeouts. The run came on a 2 out bloop single by center fielder Leody Taveras, where the ball fell in between Yankees center fielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa and shortstop Anthony Volpe. The ball then briefly got past Kiner-Falefa which allowed Rangers left fielder Ezequiel Duran, who was running on contact, to score from first base on the fielding error.

The Yankees offense struggled to get anything going in the game only scoring 2 runs against Rangers starter Dane Dunning. This Yankees offense has fallen apart since the injury of Aaron Judge. Since his departure on June 4th, the Yankees have a record of 6-10 and as a team are only hitting at an average of .196 with an OBP of .258 and an OPS of .603. Clarke Schmidt has really seen the bad side of this offense when he pitches. In his last six starts, Schmidt is 0-6 with a 1.97 ERA. In those six starts the Yankees have only scored 9 runs total, and most of the time they come in after Schmidt exits the game.

On May 25th Schmidt gave up one run over 5 innings against the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees would not score until the ninth inning and lost 3-1. On May 31st, Schmidt against the Seattle Mariners, did not give up a run in 5.2 innings. The Yankees did not score at all and lost 1-0 in extra innings. On June 6th, Schmidt gave up the most runs he had given up in the last six starts with 3 runs to the Chicago White Sox over 6 innings. The Yankees got one run in the 7th and another in the 9th. Schmidt gave up one run to the Red Sox over 5.1 innings of work on June 11th. The Yankees took the lead early on in the game with 2 runs in the 2nd inning. This was the best opportunity for Schmidt to get back in the win column, but unfortunately Michael King gave up 2 runs and the Red Sox would win the game 3-2. Schmidt’s last start this past Sunday the 18th, he gave up 2 runs in 4.2 innings. The Yankees jumped the Red Sox again, scoring 2 in the 1st inning. They did not score the rest of the game again, losing to their division rivals 6-2.

Schmidt continues to pitch well after a rough start to the season. The only thing he continues to struggle with is longevity when pitching in games as he only has one quality start this season. Moving forward, Clarke Schmidt is scheduled to pitch on Wednesday, June 28th in Oakland against the Athletics.
