Cardinals Soak the Yankees In Game One
Feels ironic that on the day the Cardinals give out a bobblehead to celebrate the career of Roger Maris and his stints between the Yankees and Cardinals, it is the Redbirds that take a long ball beating to the New York Yankees.
At first, it seemed to be all Yankees, as Luis Severino didn’t allow a hit until the bottom of the third when everything started to unravel very quickly. The Cardinals got two straight singles before Jake Bauers made a great running play in the outfield going to his right. Yet it was all for naught as Paul Goldschmidt hit a three-run shot into the Cardinals bullpen in right field.
After a walk to Nolan Gorman, the third baseman Oswaldo Cabrera made a throwing error, allowing both Gorman and the batter Arenado to reach. Jordan Walker hit a ball deep enough to allow both runners to advance to 2nd and 3rd, setting up both Alec Burleson and Paul DeJong to get RBI singles.
In the following inning, Nolan Gorman hit a 2-run shot, is 16th of the season, padding the Cardinals lead to seven.
The Cardinals scored another four runs in the bottom of the fifth, making the game 11-0. Nine of the runs are scored to Severino, though only seven were earned.
Jack Flaherty was on his game, throwing six shutout innings, with four strikeouts, before being lifted after throwing 96 pitches.
The Yankees managed to grab a run in the top of the seventh, but that was all they were able to manage before two rain delays.
In the bottom of the eighth third baseman Josh Donaldson took the mound and had himself a 1-2-3 inning. In the irony, Jordan Walker lost his 17-game hitting streak after a great play from second baseman Gleyber Torres.
The Yankees made it interesting in the ninth against Cardinals reliever Drew VerHagen. They were able to get three runs, thanks to a double play with the bases loaded, and a 2 run home run from Jake Bauers. VerHagen gave up three hits and walked three before ending the game with a ground out to Nolan Gorman.
The teams would take a 30 minute break before starting the second game of the doubleheader.
