Boston Red Sox Sweep New York Yankees

The New York Yankees came to Fenway Park over the weekend to face the rival Boston Red Sox. The teams were set to square off on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in a three game series. Due to inclement weather, Saturday’s game was moved to Sunday as well. The shift in the schedule didn’t seem to be a problem for Boston as they completed the three game sweep.

The Red Sox offense wasted no time against the scuffling Yankees on Friday, 6/16, the first game of the series. Boston plated 10 runs in the first three innings. The offensive explosion continued as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees 15-5. Boston’s Justin Turner was a catalyst for the team’s offense as he launched two home runs, including a grand slam. Turner ended the night tallying six runs batted in, tying his career high. Unfortunately for Boston, pitcher Tanner Houck was struck in the face by a line drive in the fifth inning and had to leave the game.

The second game of the series and the first of two on Sunday watched the Red Sox defeat the Yankees, 6-2. The Yankees jumped to an early 2-0 in the first inning. Unfortunately for them, this would be the only time they cracked the scoreboard. The Red Sox had an all-around team effort as five different players collected a run batted in. Rallies in the fifth and sixth innings would give Boston a 5-2 lead. The Red Sox would later score one more run on a balk and that would be all the scoring from either side. The Red Sox would win it 6-2.

The second game on Sunday and final game of the series ended up being the lowest scoring. Just like in the previous game, New York would only find the scoreboard in the first inning. A run in each the second and fourth inning, followed by two in the fifth, allowed Boston to complete the sweep at home, 4-1. Boston’s Brayan Bello had a phenomenal outing, going seven innings. Bello racked up eight strikeouts and only allowed one run. Triston Casas provided two insurance runs for Boston with a double in the fifth inning.
