For the first three innings in Citi Field it looked like it was gonna be a long night for the New York Yankees with several factors pointing to an inevitable first game loss in this two game series with the Mets. Severino was more than struggling to find the strike zone after giving up a first inning home run to Brandon Nimmo to start his first outing back, leaving many people wondering how deep he could make it into the game. Then at the plate, the Yankees hitters were getting a dose of Max Scherzer who settled in more than nicely after giving up a first inning HR to Stanton in what felt like it might be a very quiet day for the Yankees offensively. Then the top of the fourth inning happened. The Yankees stormed back with five runs coming back from a 5-1 deficit to take the lead on the Mets. The Yankees offense was able to string along enough hits in order to put themselves in scoring position where guys like Volpe and Lamahieu were able to do the heavy lifting with a double and HR respectively in big spots for the Yanks.

Despite a quick comeback for the Mets after Boone let Severino go one more batter than perhaps he should have, Josh Donaldson was able to give the lead back to the Yankees after a clutch pinch hit SAC fly. After that it was all Clay Holmes who was able to keep his hot streak going after getting out of a difficult bases loaded jam by striking out the struggling Mets shortstop, Francisco Lindor. Yankees won the game with a final score of 7-6.

Yankees stealing game one of the Subway Series was huge as it now sets up a pivotal game two with the Mets and Yankees. For one team it is an opportunity to stay hot and continue their winning ways while for the other it feels as though it is a borderline must win game and more than necessary to stop the bleeding as the Mets are 1-9 in their last ten. The game will likely be headlined by the pitchers on the mound for the Yankees and Mets. Gehrit Cole will be getting the start for the Yankees while Justin Verlander will be on the bump for the Mets. Cole has been amazing this year with a record of 7-1 and an ERA of just 2.84 while Verlander has been off to a little bit of a slower start with a record of 2-3 and ERA of 4.85. I think one of the bigger storylines to be looking at with Yankees fans is the progression of Anthony Volpe at the plate. Coming into Tuesday night's game with the Mets, Volpe was statistically one of the worst hitters in all of baseball and had Yankees fans wondering if the jump from AA ball to the big leagues was perhaps too big. Yet after last night and making a few adjustments to his plate approach and stance opting for a much more closed stance than previously before, Volpe was able to go 2-4 with two doubles and an RBI against one of the best pitchers in baseball. Though it is just one game it will be interesting to see if Volpe can build off this performance tonight against Verlander and the Mets.
