Andrew Chafin reunites with Detriot
Just as the Royals signed veteran left-handed pitcher, Will Smith, the Detroit Tigers signed Andrew Chafin, another veteran left-handed pitcher. Chafin will be heading back to Detriot as he played with the team in 2022, on a one-year contract worth, $4.25 million with incentives that can bring his total value to $6.5 million. Additionally, there is a club option for the 2025 season, with a $500,000 buyout attached. The 33-year-old had a quick stunt defending NL Champions, Arizona but was traded to Milwaukee at the trade deadline for the remainder of the 2023 season.
Chafin signed a three-year contract with the Tigers back in 2021 but decided to opt out with two years left on the deal. Chafin was one of the team's most reliable bullpen arms in the 2022 season, posting a 2.83 ERA in 64 relief appearances. Chafin did not have the same year as his 2022 season, posting a 4.73 ERA in 63 games between Arizona and Milwaukee.
Chafin signing in Detriot should help the team have a solid option in the back end of the bullpen that brings a veteran appearance for a team that has young talent. The Tigers have been quietly making great improvements to their team in the 2023-2024 off-season, signing Mark Cahna, Kenta Maeda, and extended manager AJ Hinch. Showing they believe they are not far off from winning the weak AL Central.
